from an Off-Broadway review of Spoon River:

adapted for the stage by Charles Aidman, Spoon River Anthology is Edgar Lee Masters' uncovering of life in small town America. The play is set in a cemetary of the fictional town of Spoon River, Illinois. The deceased, who inhabit the graveyard, come to life to speak frankly of their crushed dreams and concealed pleasures. The citizens are made equal by the great leveler death, and no longer hide behind the courtesy and restraint that had so often repressed them in life. The result is a play which has the ability to move an audience to tears as well as drive them to laughter.
